Visual cognition

Visual cognition, high-level vision, mid-level vision and top-down processing all refer to decision-based scene analyses that combine prior knowledge with retinal input to generate representations. The label "visual cognition" is little used at present, but research and experiments on mid- and high-level, inference-based vision have flourished, becoming in the 21st century a significant, if oft...

Visual Attention and Cognition

It has been proposed that saccadic eye movements to visual targets are preceded by covert shifts of attention to these locations. In this review, we discuss the evidence for this hypothesis and the role of brain regions in directing rapid shifts of attention and gaze. We suggest there is a common neural architecture mediating both these types of movement.

Visual Cognition in Microscopy

We can learn a great deal about cognition through the study of visual information systems – systems in which a domain of visual information is used to explore a separate target domain (e.g., telescope images used to explore astronomy). This study examined a real world task, microscope slide interpretation, in a complex visual domain, histology. Histology is a fundamental course in biology and m...

Visual Shape and Implications for Visual Cognition

Human vision organizes object shapes in terms of parts and their spatial relationships. Converging experimental evidence suggests that parts are computed rapidly and early in visual processing. We review theories of how human vision parses shapes. In particular, we discuss the minima rule for finding part boundaries on shapes, geometric factors for creating part cuts, and a theory of part salie...
